Elizabeth Barrett Browning: a Discussion of How Do I Love Thee?
“How Do I Love Thee?” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning was written in 1845 while she was being courted by the English poet, Robert Browning. The poem is also titled Sonnet XLIII from Sonnets From the Portuguese.
Early Experiences
Elizabeth Barrett was born in Durham England in 1806, the first daughter of affluent parents who owned sugar plantations in Jamaica. She was home-schooled and read voraciously in history, philosophy and literature. Young Elizabeth learned Hebrew in order to read original Bible texts and Greek in order to read original Greek drama and philosophy. She began writing poems when she was 12 years old, though she did not publish her first collection for another twenty years.
Elizabeth Barrett developed a serious respiratory ailment by age 15 and a horse riding accident shortly thereafter left her with a serious spinal injury. These two health problems remained with her all of her life.
In 1828 her mother died and four years later the family business faltered and her father sold the Durham estate and moved the family to a coastal town. He was stern, protective, and even tyrannical and forbid any of his children to marry. In 1833 Elizabeth published her first work, a translation of Prometheus Bound by the Greek dramatist Aeschylus.
A few years later the family moved to London. Her father began sending Elizabeth’s younger brothers and sisters to Jamaica to help with the family business. Elizabeth was distressed because she openly opposed slavery in Jamaica and on the family plantations and because she did not want her siblings sent away.
Early Writing
In 1838 Elizabeth Barrett wrote and published The Seraphim and Other Poems. The collection took the form of a classical Greek tragedy and expressed her deep Christian sentiments.
Shortly thereafter, Elizabeth’s poor health prompted her to move to Italy, accompanied by her dear brother Edward, whom she referred to as “Bro.” Unfortunately he drowned a year later in a sailing accident and Elizabeth retuned to London, seriously ill, emotionally broken, and hopelessly grief-stricken. She became reclusive for the next five years, confining herself to her bedroom.
She continued to write poetry, however, and published a collection in 1844 simply titled, Poems. It was also published in the United States with an introduction by Edgar Allan Poe. In one of the poems she praised one of the works of Robert Browning, which gained his attention. He wrote back to her, expressing his admiration for Poems.
Robert Browning
Over the next twenty months Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning exchanged 574 letters. An admiration, respect, and love for each other grew and flourished. In 1845 Robert Browning sent Elizabeth a telegram which read, “I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett. I do, as I say, love these books with all my heart – and I love you too.” A few months later the two met and fell in love.
Inspired by her love for Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett wrote the 44 love poems which were collected in Sonnets From the Portuguese and which were eventually published in 1850. Her growing love for Robert and her ability to express her emotions in the sonnets and love poems allowed Elizabeth to escape from the oppression of her father and the depression of her recluse.
Her father strongly opposed the relationship so she kept her love affair a secret as long as possible. The couple eloped in 1846 and her father never forgave her or spoke to her thereafter.
Move to Italy
Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her husband, Robert, went to Pisa, Italy and soon settled in Florence where she spent the rest of her life, with occasional visits to London. Soon Elizabeth’s health improved enough to be able to give birth to the couple’s only child, Robert.
In 1850 she published Sonnets From the Portuguese. Some have speculated that the title was chosen to hide the personal nature of the sonnets and to imply that the collection was a translation of earlier works. However, Robert’s pet name for Elizabeth was “my little Portuguese,” a reflection on Elizabeth’s darker, mediterranean complexion, possibly inherited from the family’s Jamaican ties.
While living in Florence, Elizabeth Barrett Browning published 3 more considerable works. She addressed Italian political topics and some other unpopular subjects, such as slavery, child labor, male domination, and a woman’s right to intellectual freedom. Though her popularity decreased as a result of these choices, she was read and heard and recognized throughout Europe. She died in Florence in 1861.
The Poem, “How Do I Love Thee?”
Sonnet XLIII, “How Do I Love Thee?” is probably Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s most popular love poem. It is heartfelt, romantic, loving, elegant, and simple. It is also quite memorable.
The love poem starts with the question, “How Do I Love Thee?” and proceeds to count the ways. Her Christian spirituality testifies that she loves Robert “to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach.” She then professes seven more ways that she loves Robert. Her “passion put to use in my old griefs” refers to the depth of her former despair. The love that “I seemed to lose with my lost saints” refers to the lost loves of her mother and her brother.
The love poem ends with the declaration that time and death will not diminish her love for Robert because “if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.”
How Do I Love Thee
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,–I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!–and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

English – Lingqua franca
English as a lingua franca
In recent years, the term ‘English as a lingua franca’ (ELF) has emerged as a way of referring to communication in English between speakers with different first languages. Since roughly only one out of every four users of English in the world is a native speaker of the language (Crystal 2003), most ELF interactions take place among ‘non-native’ speakers of English.
Although this does not preclude the participation of English native speakers in ELF interaction, what is distinctive about ELF is that, in most cases, it is ‘a ‘contact language’ between persons who share neither a common native tongue nor a common (national) culture, and for whom English is the chosen foreign language of communication’ (Firth 1996: 240). Defined in this way, ELF is part of the more general phenomenon of ‘English as an international language’ (EIL) or ‘World Englishes’. (For comprehensive overviews, see Jenkins 2003; McArthur 1998; Melchers and Shaw 2003.) EIL, along with ‘English as a global language’ (e.g. Crystal 2003; Gnutzmann 1999), ‘English as a world language’ (e.g. Mair 2003) and ‘World English’ (Brutt-Griffler 2002) have for some time been used as general cover terms for uses of English spanning Inner Circle, Outer Circle, and Expanding Circle contexts (Kachru 1992). The traditional meaning of EIL thus comprises uses of English within and across Kachru’s ‘Circles’, for intranational as well as international communication. However, when English is chosen as the means of communication among people from different first language backgrounds, across linguacultural boundaries, the preferred term is ‘English as a lingua franca’ (House 1999; Seidlhofer 2001), although the terms ‘English as a medium of intercultural communication’ (Meierkord 1996), and, in this more specific and more recent meaning, ‘English as an international language ‘ (Jenkins 2000), are also used.Despite being welcomed by some and deplored by others, it cannot be denied that English functions as a global lingua franca. However, what has so far tended to be denied is that, as a consequence of its international use, English is being shaped at least as much by its nonnative speakers as by its native speakers. This has led to a somewhat paradoxical situation: on the one hand, for the majority of its users, English is a foreign language, and the vast majority of verbal exchanges in English do not involve any native speakers of the language at all. On the other hand, there is still a tendency for native speakers to be regarded as custodians over what is acceptable usage. Thus, in order for the ELT Journal Volume 59/4 October 2005; doi:10.1093/elt/cci064 qThe Author 2005. Published by Oxford University Press; all rights reserved. 339 Downloaded from eltj.oxfordjournals.org by guest on March 1, 2011 concept of ELF to gain acceptance alongside English as native language, there have been calls for the systematic study of the nature of ELF—what it looks and sounds like and how people actually use it and make it work—and a consideration of the implications for the teaching and learning of the language. Empirical work on the linguistic description of ELF at a number of levels has in fact been under way for several years now. Research has been carried out at the level of phonology (Jenkins 2000), pragmatics (Meierkord 1996), and lexicogrammar (Seidlhofer 2004, which also offers an overview of descriptive work to date). ELF corpora are now also being compiled and analysed, such as the English as a lingua franca in Academic settings (ELFA) corpus (Mauranen 2003) and the general Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE) (Seidlhofer 2004). While space prevents summarizing the findings of this research here, two illustrative examples can be mentioned. Thus, Jenkins (2000) found that being able to pronounce some sounds that are often regarded as ‘particularly English’ but also particularly difficult, namely the ‘th’ sounds /u/ and /D/ and the ‘dark l’ allophone [ł], is not necessary for international intelligibility through ELF. Similarly, analyses of ELF interactions captured in the VOICE corpus clearly show that although ELF speakers often do not use the third person singular present tense ‘-s’ marking in their verbs, this does not lead to any misunderstandings or communication problems.
This gradually accumulating body of work is leading to a better understanding of the nature of ELF, which in turn is a prerequisite for taking informed decisions, especially in language policy and language teaching (McKay 2002). Thus, the features of English which tend to be crucial for international intelligibility and therefore need to be taught for production and reception are being distinguished from the (‘non-native’) features that tend not to cause misunderstandings and thus do not need to constitute a focus for production teaching for those learners who intend to use English mainly in international settings. Acting on these insights can free up valuable teaching time for more general language awareness and communication strategies; these may have more ‘mileage’ for learners than striving for mastery of fine nuances of nativespeaker language use that are communicatively redundant or even counter-productive in lingua franca settings, and which may anyway not be teachable in advance, but only learnable by subsequent experience of the language. It should be stressed, however, that linguistic descriptions alone cannot, of course, determine what needs to be taught and learnt for particular purposes and in particular settings—they provide necessary but not sufficient guidance for what will always be pedagogical decisions.

Ukraine Woman – What Makes Them Look For Love Abroad?
These facts partially explain why so many Ukraine women are looking for relationships abroad. It is not that there are no men in their native country; they simply want to start a new and better life.
Ukraine is relatively big compared to many of the other European countries. It became part of the huge Soviet Union with all positive and negative effects of this and officially became a separate republic in 1991. During the Soviet years and the bad governmental politics, the country faced big challenges and problems.
Private property was limited and any private initiative was banned. Later the new government could not deal with the modern economy tempo and the country sank to poverty. Even today the political situation is unclear and most people are not satisfied with their governors.
Typically a Ukraine woman is well educated and speaks more than two languages. The country is bilingual and people speak both Ukrainian and Russian. In the last years English, German and other western languages are taught at school too. Young women go to university as soon as they finish high school. There are many good specialists especially in the National Taras Shevchenko University Of Kyiv and National Technical University Of Ukraine Kiev Polytechnic Institute – both leaders in professional education.
Unfortunately good education does not guarantee a job in an economy pressed by inflation and limited investments. You will be surprised to learn how many girls take their bachelor or masters degrees in science, economy or philology, only to become waitresses or shop assistants working literally for pennies on the dollar. Naturally girls are disappointed and want to go abroad where they can put their knowledge into practice and be respected by their employers.
Usually these women have already been abroad. There are many companies which hire people for the so called Work & Travel Summer Programs – young people from the universities are given the chance to work as washers, cleaners or maids in big restaurants or hotel chains in the United States, UK or Spain.
Though these jobs are not prestigious, every normal girl prefers them because they are better paid than a manager position in their local country. A popular slogan from ad-campaign of those Work & Travel says: We are looking for a maid with a salary of a boss.
Women who have not been abroad on the other hand have heard a lot about the life there. They may have relatives of friends who have moved to western countries and they are also looking for the right match abroad. In addition they are feeling sick of local men who they know in detail, know their cheap tricks and attitude.
Of course love is not a mirage and the typical Ukraine woman will make everything possible to prove her feelings. These ladies are not that desperate and would not try to lie you that they like you if they do not. Indeed many of them are trying to get married abroad in order to have legal right to stay and work in the foreign country, but these are rare exceptions.
There is no intelligent woman on this planet who would take a step to marriage abroad if she does not have feelings for the man or if she believes that after the marriage she can simply take her visa and start her own life. However, you are the other side in this international relationship are and you can see how everything is going before asking her to marry you.
What happens next is up to you..

Business English Training; Keys To Success
Of course where the market appears, so do the companies set up to capitalise. Deciding on a language training provider can be daunting, and the unregulated nature of the training industry in most countries can mean huge variation in the quality of the training, and therefore huge variation in the return on investment for the companies’ management. So, what is it that makes some training effective, while other programmes are a waste of time? How can companies minimize the risk of investing in lame-duck language training?
The first piece of advice is to make informed decisions on language training providers based on information from reliable sources. Websites, brochures, marketing emails and fliers can hold a great deal of information, but the most reliable source is a person who has attended or been involved in training elsewhere. One must be careful though, as the ‘famous’ providers – those with strong brand recognition – may be well-known as a result of an over-emphasis on marketing, and not necessarily on quality. ‘Big’ is not always ‘better’ when it comes to training providers; larger establishments usually struggle to find enough good teachers, and compromises are sometimes made. Moreover, while smaller schools tend to be run or heavily influenced by the most important people, the teachers, larger training centres inevitably move towards being driven solely by the bottom line. This is not to say that one should shy away from providers with strong marketing; we’re looking for providers who like to show off their benefits, after all. Be wary of those who aren’t willing to talk about their benefits.
Let’s stop talking about marketing. We are discussing education, and in reality the quality of education comes down to two things; the quality of the teachers and the quality of the courses. Quality of customer service and organisation and coordination by the provider also play a part in your satisfaction, but in terms of return on investment it’s the teachers and the courses that are going to deliver.
Ask about the teachers. Many companies put blind faith in the training provider that they will provide the right people for the job, inevitably causing disappointment when the wonderful teacher promised in the sales pitch to turns out to be useless. Ask to see their resume, ask to meet them. A good training provider will be proud of their teachers and willing to show them off on demand. When you see the resume, bear in mind that experience isn’t everything. While you don’t want a brand new teacher with little experience, many teachers with decades of experience can seem ‘burned out’, as if they have lost the passion for their profession. Look out for teacher training qualifications, and look for their own educational background and work experience. How can someone who never went to university or never worked in a business environment be expected to teach your staff about contemporary business communication? Personality is important, so choose teachers you actually like, choose teachers who your staff will look forward to spending time with, choose teachers who have passion and commitment to their job written all over their face.
Ask about the courses. More to the point, demand courses which are designed to fit your exact needs. Many training providers use generic ‘business English’ courses which are, on the whole, euro-centric, non-specific, and rapidly out of date. The English your sales team needs is very different from the type of language required by your management team, or customer service team. Demand courses designed for your industry; if you’re involved in shipping, make sure that topics are related to shipping, or you could find your staff learning language they will never be able to use. Decide what aspects of your staff’s English to focus on; are they regularly emailing, meeting clients, giving presentations, writing reports or proposals, or using the telephone? Demand that your staff learn the right skills and language. But also gauge the provider’s ability to provide enjoyable programs. Endless photocopied handouts are plain boring. Are the providers going to use communicative, interactive activities? Are the providers going to use modern business technology to teach modern business techniques? What are they going to do to motivate your staff? These are questions to bear in mind when perusing websites and meeting the sales people from the schools. A final tip for effective language training: training is more effective if classes are small, and trainees are divided based on their level of English and specific job responsibilities. Ask the provider how they will assess your staff, and how they plan to organize the trainees into groups. Steer clear of anyone willing to mix abilities and compromise quality by filling classes with dozens of trainees who each have their own learning objectives.
Make sure you clearly define your objectives, and choose the provider who shows you, just as clearly, how they are going to meet your objectives through enjoyable, professional, communicative training delivered by happy, qualified, devoted teachers. In Jakarta, Indonesia, one professional training provider is leading the way in language programmes for businesses. Take a look at kursus bahasa inggris to see how it’s done.

Tools to learn french (online/unplugged)?
Hi, I am in search for a pragmatic and good french course. The BBC has one but it is forbidden in my country! ack, some laws are stupid… anyway, anybody knows of a good and free online course I can take?
Also, there is some books by Oxford press (tales and novels) that are classified according to the English proficiency required to understand them. I wonder if there is something similar for French or any other tools you may recommend, I have no money to go take good lessons and the not so expensive lessons usually are way too slow and I am a fast learner but don’t have anybody that speaks French around to practice with
Thank you.

German jobs London and throughout Europe
The UK is still a country that is in high demand. It’s financial centre and its positioning creates a conduit to the US and further attractions for foreign investors. Individuals are still travelling through the open market (EU) from country to country trying to utilize their skills in the best environment possible.
Jobs in London are stagnant for many industries, but due to its vast portfolio of language job seeking professionals and especially German jobs London and German speaking professionals there has been an uptake in these sorts of professions in London and the UK.
Even though a lot of Germans are bilingual, in the sense that they speak English as a second language, there are a lot of Germans and non native Germany in the UK. These individuals are raising the bar for language speaking professionals as UK residents who learn German as a second language do not often offer the standard that native German speakers offer.
The dialect differs from region to region in Germany, as it does in the UK, but with stronger variations. A person in north Germany may struggle to understand someone from southern Germany due to the influences from neighboring countries.
Countries that surround Germany affect the jobs that are available to German speaking language professionals. A high percentage of Polish decide to immigrate from their home country to other countries to seek higher wages and send the money home. When Germans migrate, they move because of the quality of life and interest of that particular region. It would be more of a long term thing rather than a short term fix which is applicable to the Poles.
German jobs London and German speaking jobs are highly sought after and to speak the language correctly takes years of practice.
There are many great jobs out there in cities such as London, Paris and Rome which require German language professionals. We hope that countries will receive these foreign language professionals as well as London has received them. In the future countries will have to accept the fact that they are part of a free economy and accept people with multi language skills from all walks of life.
